 Who Is Andy Hunter ?

Andy Hunter is a High Performance coach and swimmer. He runs his own swimming academy for High Performance swimmers.

He was also coach to Larne Swimming Club’s Premier Squad for 3 years and brought huge success to the club until 2008.

Andy’s involvement in swimming commenced at an early age following his father’s achievements as an International swimmer. Andy snr swam in the Olympic Games in 1972. He also competed successfully in both the 1970 and 1974 Commonwealth Games placing 7th in the Final in Christchurch.

Andy jnr had a flourishing school swimming career before going on to win numerous Ulster and Irish titles in individual and relay events. He was on the panel for the Commonwealth Games in both 2002 and 2006 and went on to win a bronze medal at the European Masters Swimming Championships in Stockholm in 2005 where he set an Irish Masters Long Course record of 53.58 secs.

He has been a member of the Ulster Swim squad from 1995 - 2007 and was a member of the Irish Swim squad. Andy has coached 3 sub 53 Long Course 100m freestylers including a British Youth Championship Gold medallist.

Andy is a qualified Swimming coach, Athletics coach and fitness instructor. He uses this benefit of knowledge in different sports to his advantage as a coach. Following training stints in many parts of the world including Hamburg with Dirk Lange (coach to World record holders Mark Foster, Sandra Volker and Therese Alshammer) and Sydney with Brooke Hanson (Olympic silver medalist) Andy decided to set up the Andy Hunter Academy (AHA) for High Performance swimmers in an attempt to level the playing field for local swimmers and give them the opportunity to train outside the general club system with other Elite swimmers.

Andy was recently quoted as saying that:

‘As a coach of swimming I see myself as first and foremost a High Performance coach. My goal is to work with High Performance athletes who have the potential, desire and application to make finals and podium finishes at major championships’

As Andy was coached for many years by double Commonwealth Games athletics champion and Olympic Games finalist Mike Bull he insists there is no reason why local swimmers cannot go right to the top in the competitive swimming arena.
